영어 칼럼 -Da Munhwa : Teaching acceptance or hammering down the nail that sticks up?

Dr. Hilary V. Finchum-Sung 서울대학교 음악대학 국악과 교수

“Ifyou have an American costume of some sort─a cowboy hat or bandana─something that screams America, that would be great,” my daughter’s second grade teacher added, as we wound up our conversation on how I might best prepare for my da munhwa(multicultural) class presentation. “Seonsaengnim,” I began cautiously, “we don’t have an American costume in the U.S. It’s a multi─ethnic, multicultural society; having one national costume to represent American culture just doesn’t make sense.” Suffice to say, my conversation with the teacher about the upcoming da munhwa had not been an easygoing interchange.
